What are NZ Notices to Mariners?
The New Zealand Notices to Mariners are booklets produced fortnightly by LINZ that are the authority for correcting New Zealand nautical charts. These charts are listed in the New Zealand Chart Catalogue (NZ202).
New Zealand Notices to Mariners also:
- Detail corrections to be made to authoritative nautical publications such as the LINZ Hydrographic Charts and the NZ Nautical Almanac;
- Notify the publication, withdrawal or cancellation of New Zealand nautical charts and nautical publications;
- Notify changes to the NZMariner (LINZ Raster Navigation Chart folio);
- Notify the publication, release or withdrawal of British Admiralty nautical publications covering the New Zealand area of charting responsibility, such as the New Zealand Pilot (NP51).
LINZ Hydrographic Services is authorised to produce the NZ Notices to Mariners under Maritime Rules Part 25. Notices to Mariners updates to NZMariner (LINZ Raster Navigation Chart folio) are available monthly.
The area covered by NZ Notices to Mariners is shown in the Annual Summary of Notices to Mariners - Notice 1, which is found in the NZ Nautical Almanac. Alternatively click the link below to view this image online. Areas of New Zealand Charting and Coverage of Notices to Mariners.
The New Zealand Notices to Mariners are the authority for correcting New Zealand and British Admiralty charts of the New Zealand area of charting responsibility. The NZ Notices to Mariners on this site do not include Australian or British Admiralty Notices, and as a result do not meet the requirements as specified in Maritime Rules Part 25 Nautical Charts and Publications (pursuant to Section 36 of the Maritime Transport Act 1994).
Mariners are reminded to routinely monitor broadcast warnings, particularly the International SafetyNET or NAVTEX Service (part of the International Maritime Organization's Global Maritime Distress and Safety System Broadcasts). These can provide more timely access to important navigation safety information.
Mariners are requested to immediately inform LINZ Hydrographic Services of the discovery of new or suspected dangers to navigation, or shortcomings in charts and publications. This can be done on the Hydrographic Note web page for Notices to Mariners notifications.
More general information is available on Notices to Mariners as published in the New Zealand Nautical Almanac 2007/08 (NZ204). General information on Notices to Mariners (pdf 60.4KB).

Applying corrections to authoritative NZ nautical publications
Licensed mariners and other parties covered by Maritime Rule 25 are required to keep their nautical publications corrected using Notices to Mariners.
Applying corrections to Charts
LINZ recommends the use of the British Admiralty publication "How to Keep your Admiralty Charts Up-to-Date" (NP294) for instructions on applying Notices to Mariners corrections to nautical charts. This publication is available for purchase in New Zealand from the Admiralty Chart Agent, Trans Pacific Marine Ltd.
Applying corrections to the nautical almanac
The New Zealand Nautical Almanac (NZ 204) provides a table (on page 2) to record the completion of corrections for each edition of Notices to Mariners. The individual sections of the NZ Nautical Almanac available on this website are corrected to Notices to Mariners. Each new edition of the Nautical Almanac (available annually from July 1) contains a note on page 1, stating the last Notices to Mariners edition applied to the publication before print. It is up to the purchaser to update for any subsequent Notices to Mariners corrections to the Nautical Almanac.
